Yellow D&J and green C&C lovelocks, Paris
Today Clive and I paid a visit to our ‘lovelock’ on the Pont des Arts in Paris.
In November, 2009, we noticed a few padlocks on this historic bridge. After giving the idea some thought, we left our own lovelock there, a padlock with a cute cow on it, because that was the best we could find in the BHV basement. A few months later, I wrote my first blog post about it. As the photos in that post show, there weren’t many lovelocks on the Pont des Arts back then.
After the city cleared the first batch of lovelocks, we, along with others, replaced our original padlock with a bright green one, and last spring, our friends D&J added their yellow padlock beside ours.
Today we found the two lovelocks glowing in the sun.

The bridge seems to groan under the weight of thousands of lovelocks that now cover its sides, and I continue to have mixed feelings about this phenomenon, despite having contributed to it. Some of the locks are ridiculously large, but at least they are (so far, anyway) contained.
The lovelocks have become a tourist attraction. They symbolise romance. This is Paris, after all, a city for lovers of all ages.

Karin, yes the sunshine has been brilliant! We will return to Helmut Newcake I’m sure, especially if our gluten-free friends return to Paris 🙂 Hope you’re having some sun where you are too.

Yes this is a controversial topic, or at least a thought-provoking one. I always say, as long as the locks are contained and don’t end up all over the Louvre, I don’t have a problem. 🙂 I think it’s a rather charming idea and adds to the city.
Hello French Frye 🙂 This is indeed controversial and I struggle with the romantic/charm aspect vs. the ‘visual clutter/’don’t let it spread any further’ aspect! We feel it’s alright at this point and hope it remains contained.
